I Should Have Read The Signs

There were signs which said

"Keep off the Grass"

which I ignored.

I jumped over your picket fence

and pitched my tent

on the green weeds of your life.

I belly-flopped into your fishpond,

which looked so safe for paddling,

but was not.

I staggered dripping to your door

rung the bell and offered you

a handful of flowers

picked from your garden.

I wiped my muddy feet

on the shag-pile carpet of your heart

and when you were not looking

slipped my grubby self

in with your dirty laundry.
